"All readers of any age need instruction and support that helps them become more independent and self-reflective in their work." â€" Gail Boushey and Joan Moser

In The CAFE Book, Gail Boushey and Joan Moser present a practical, simple way to integrate assessment into daily reading and classroom discussion. The CAFE system, based on research into the habits of proficient readers, is an acronym for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding vocabulary. The system includes goal-setting with students in individual conferences, posting of goals on a whole-class board, developing small-group instruction based on clusters of students with similar goals, and targeting whole-class instruction based on emerging student needs.

Gail and Joan developed the CAFE system to support teachers as they:
·         organize assessment data so it truly informs instruction;
·         track each child's strengths and goals, thereby maximizing time with him or her;
·         create flexible groups of students, all focused on a specific reading strategy; and
·         help students remember and retrieve the reading strategies they learned.

The CAFE system does not require expensive materials, complicated training, or complete changes to current classroom literacy approaches. Rather, it provides a structure for conferring with students, a language for talking about reading development, and a system for tracking growth and fostering student independence. The CAFE system’s built-in flexibility allows teachers to tailor the system to reflect the needs of their students and their state’s standards. And it’s a perfect complement to The Daily Five, “The Sisters” inf! luential first book, which lays out a structure for keeping al! l studen ts engaged in productive literacy work for every hour of every classroom day.
  • Includes nearly 250 recipes plus 150 sub-recipes, more than 100 photographs, and approximately 75 illustrations
  • Breaks the café down into its five key components -- the bakery, the pastry shop, the savory kitchen, beverages, and the retail shelf -- with expert advice and contemporary recipes for each area
  • Author Francisco Migoya is an assistant professor at The Culinary Institute of America, where he teaches the Café Operations class for the Baking and Pastry Arts program

The design of coffee shops is increasingly on the move. Where cafs have traditionally been viewed as places principally to enjoy a coffee, they have evolved to show a broad range of multifunctional purposes and amenities: They can, for instance, exist as cozy lunch-time meeting spots before abruptly transforming into vibrant late-night bars after sundown. Caf! Best of Coffee Shop Design shows the wide scope of differ! ent caf concepts, including coffee bars as integral parts of c! utting-e dge multipurpose buildings, flagship stores and traditional shops with a contemporary twist. The 40 projects featured comprise an extensive variety of designs and styles, ranging from minimalist, strict and reduced, to opulent and extravagant.

Do you love teaching but feel exhausted from the energy you expend cajoling, disciplining, and directing students on a daily basis? If so, you'll want to meet Â"The Sisters”, Gail Boushey and Joan Moser. Based on literacy learning and motivation research, they created a structure called The Daily Five which has been practiced and refined in their own classrooms for ten years, and shared with thousands of teachers throughout the United States. The Daily Five is a series of literacy tasks (reading to self, reading with someone, writing, word work, and listening to reading) which students complete daily while the teacher meets with small groups or confers with individuals.

This book not only explains the philosophy behind! the structure, but shows you how to carefully and systematically train your students to participate in each of the five components.

Explicit modeling practice, reflecting and refining take place during the launching phase, preparing the foundation for a year of meaningful content instruction tailored to meet the needs of each child.

The Daily Five is more than a management system or a curriculum framework; it is a structure that will help students develop the habits that lead to a lifetime of independent literacy.

Cryogenic scientist gone wrong, Mr. Freeze wants to turn Gotham City into a frozen wasteland. Poison Ivy has revenge on her mind after a toxic run-in with a Wayne Enterprises scientist. While she has designs on Mr. Freeze, his cold heart is consumed only by his demented plans. With the addition of Batgirl, the dynamic duo become a trio. Will Gotham survive?Batman
Thanks to the ambitious vision of director Tim Burton, the blockbuster hit of 1989 delivers the goods despite an occasionally spotty script, giving the caped crusader a thorough overhaul in keeping with the crime fighter's evolution in DC Comics. Michael Keaton strikes just the right mood as the brooding "Dark Knight" of Go! tham City; Kim Basinger plays Gotham's intrepid reporter Vicki Vale; and Jack Nicholson goes wild as the maniacal and scene-stealing Joker, who plots a takeover of the city with his lethal Smilex gas. Triumphant Oscar-winning production design by the late Anton Furst turns Batman into a visual feast, and Burton brilliantly establishes a darkly mythic approach to Batman's legacy. Danny Elfman's now-classic score propels the action with bold, muscular verve. --Jeff Shannon

Batman Returns
Tim Burton's sequel to his phenomenally successful 1989 "Batman" doesn't try to top the first picture, either with splashier special effects or with loftier pretensions to significance; nor does it simply go through the motions, repeating the surefire stuff with a self-satisfied air of professionalism. It's a blend of playful novelty and reassuring familiarity-a difficult mixture to get right. This time, the hero (again Michael Keaton) does battle with! a greedy businessman named Max Shreck (Christopher Walken) an! d the ro ly-poly arch-criminal known as the Penguin (Danny DeVito). And whenever Batman ventures out on one of his nocturnal crime-fighting missions, he runs into a mysterious woman who dresses like a cat and carries a whip. The hilariously twisted relationship between the hero and the Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer) plays like an apache dance in animal costumes, and it's the glory of the movie. The cat clothes seem to release something strange and wild in Pfeiffer: her performance is ferociously sexy and uninhibitedly, over-the-top funny. As in the first movie, Burton gives the material a luxurious masked-ball quality and a sly contemporary wit without violating the myth's low, cheesy comic-book origins. He's an artist who's comfortable with both the higher aspirations and the lower instincts of his nature as an entertainer: he and Batman are an ideal match.

Batman Forever
When Tim Burton and Michael Keaton announced that they'd had enough of the Batman franchise, director Joel Schumacher stepped in (with Burton as coproducer) to make this action-packed extravaganza starring Val Kilmer as the caped crusader. Batman is up against two of Gotham City's most colorful criminals, the Riddler (a role tailor-made for funnyman Jim Carrey) and the diabolical Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones), who join forces to conquer Gotham's population with a brain-draining device. Nicole Kidman plays the seductive psychologist who wants to know what makes Batman tick. Boasting a redesigned Batmobile and plenty of new Bat hardware, Batman Forever also introduces Robin the Boy Wonder (Chris O'Donnell) whose close alliance with Batman led more than a few critics to ponder the series' homoerotic subtext. No matter how you interpret it, Schumacher's take on the Batman legacy is simultaneously amusing, lavishly epic, and prone to chronic sensory overload. --Jeff Shannon

Batman & Robin
Following Val Kilmer's p! ortrayal of the caped crusader in Batman Forever, the f! ourth Batman feature stars George Clooney under the pointy-eared cowl, with Chris O'Donnell returning as Robin the Boy Wonder. This time the dynamic duo is up against the nefarious Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger), who is bent on turning the world into an iceberg, and the slyly seductive but highly toxic Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman), who wants to eliminate all animal life and turn the Earth into a gigantic greenhouse. Alicia Silverstone lends a hand as Batgirl, and Elle McPherson plays the thankless role of Batman/Bruce Wayne's fiancée. A sensory assault of dazzling colors, senseless action, and lavish sets run amok, this Batman & Robin offers an overdose of eye candy, but it is strictly for devoted Bat-o-philes. --Jeff ShannonNew from the award-winning team behind ALL-STAR SUPERMAN!

Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, the creative team of ALL-STAR SUPERMAN, reunite to tell the adventures of the all-new Batman and Robin.

The new Dynamic Duo hits the streets! with a bang in their new fl ying Batmobile to face an assemblage of villains called the Circus of Strange. They also tackle their first mission investigating a child who’s been abducted by the mysterious Domino Killer. But will everything go smoothly? And who exactly are the new Batman and Robin? The newest era of The Dark Knight begins here!

Go Game with Wood Board

  • Wood game board with felted corners underneath
  • 11 3/4" x 11 3/4" board
  • Go stones included
  • Instruction book with clear instructions included
Wood game board with felted corners underneath. Includes "Go" stones and instructions. 11 3/4" X 11 1/4" board.Go is probably one of the world's most intimidating games, one which conjures up images of players gleefully setting out for blood as they devise militaristic board moves. This complex exercise in strategy originated some 4,000 years ago in the East and has no direct Western counterpart. The game's playing surface is divided into 361 intersections. Players place stones on the corners of the squares, and the object is to surround the stones of their opponents. This edition's wooden game board is heavy, durable, and has an elegant blond veneer. The plastic stones are less impressive. The set comes with a first-rate! rule book: filled with diagrams, examples, and a useful recap section midway through the instructions, it'll make any novice good to Go. --Tony Mason

Beloved classic recounts the haunting, sentimental tale of Nello, a young boy who ! aspires to be a painter, and his beloved Patrasche, a Belgian work dog â€" both of whom endure poverty, hunger, cruelty and rejection up to their tragic, bittersweet end. Newly reset in large, easy-to-read type.
Maria Louise Ramé (1839-1908) was an English novelist who often chose to write under the pen-name Ouida for her more than 40 novels, children's books and collections of short stories and essays. Her early works were considered quite racy for Victorian-era readers, and many of her stories and characters were based on well-known people that attended soirees at the Langham Hotel, London, where she lived for a brief time. This collection of stories contains her most well-known, "A Dog of Flanders," the poignant story about a young Flemish boy named Nello and his companion, a dog named Patrasche. Also included in this collection: "The Nürnberg Stove," a story about a young boy's 3-day journey hidden inside a stove; "In the Apple Country" about a lovable but feisty! young Italian girl who finds herself in the English countrysi! de; and "The Little Earl," a story about a young earl who runs away from his palace to explore his kingdom.Digitally Restored and Re-mastered â€" Presented in its Original Aspect Ratio

A charming tale of love, friendship and a dog named Patrasche…
Nello (David Ladd) and his grandfather (Donald Crisp) live a poor, unhappy life, until they find a wounded dog by the side of the road. They care for their new “friend,” who recovers and gives Nello the hope to pursue his dream of becoming an artist.
